What an AI chatbot can actually do for a small business

Most small business owners picture a chatbot as a clunky FAQ widget. The useful version is closer to a tireless front desk. A well built chatbot answers the questions you get fifty times a week, books appointments straight into your calendar, captures the lead before they leave, and hands off to you only when the conversation actually needs a human.

The win is not replacing people. It is catching the business that used to slip away after hours, when nobody was there to reply. A visitor at 9pm who gets an instant, accurate answer is far more likely to still be a customer the next morning.

Three things separate a chatbot that helps from one that annoys. First, it has to know your business, not the internet in general, so it needs your real services, hours, and policies behind it. Second, it has to know when to stop talking and pass the person to you. Third, it has to do something with the conversation, like save the lead or book the slot, instead of just chatting.

Start small. Pick the five questions you answer most, the one action you want visitors to take, and wire those up first. You can always teach it more later.
